Apprentice Spotlight: Catherine

Meet our Real Pilates apprentice Catherine Escueta. Born and raised in Eatontown, NJ, Catherine has been dancing since she was 4 years old. She is now entering her senior year at SUNY Purchase, one of the most prestigious dance and arts programs in the country, pursuing a dual degree in Dance and Arts Management. This summer she is completing the Real Pilates Comprehensive Teacher Training Program.

What made you want to teach Pilates?

I wanted to teach Pilates after talking to two professors at school, both in their 70s, both still practicing and teaching Pilates. It has kept them healthy, strong, and active for many, many years. I want to stay healthy, strong, and active long into my future, and I want to empower others to do the same.

Pilates is full of aha moments. What is one of your most memorable lightbulb moments?

My favorite lightbulb moments are when I'm in a session and my instructor phrases the exercise differently, maybe with some new imagery or phrases. Suddenly, I'm feeling the muscles I'm supposed to be feeling, and they are working hard! I've had these moments on a number of exercises, and I'm always grateful for the new viewpoint.

What is your favorite apparatus and why?

Currently the Wunda Chair, although that's subject to change! It's versatile, challenging, and its exercises are deceptively difficult. It always makes me break a sweat and feel like I'm really working.
